Branch One Hundred and Seventy Two
When Jessica came out of the bathroom she felt somewhat empty not seeing Xavier there. She picked up her phone from the nightstand and made her way downstairs. Her attention was drawn to the small chatter in the living room and she went there.
“How did you walk by yourself all the way here?” Xavier asked when he saw her limping and walking toward him.
“I can not stay coupled up in the room all day, and I need to exercise it so it can heal faster too” she explained.
He met her halfway and helped her gently to the couch where she proceeded to have her seat. Her eyes landed on the two men who were standing there. She found it suspicious because she knew all the house staff and they were not a part of them.
She tried to control her gaze from falling so continuously on them but it was quite difficult for her. “Who?” she whispered leaning to ask Xavier who was sitting right next to her.
“Why don’t we let them introduce themselves?” he asked before turning to face the men standing there like statues. “Introduce yourself to her”
“Hello, Mrs. Delgado,” the first one said. Jessica had never thought seriously of taking the Delgado name but hearing someone address her as one made her happy. It was a feeling she could not quite explain and she did not understand it either.
“I am Butch” the first one continued before stopping and allowing the next man to take over. “Hello Mrs. Delgado” she concluded at that moment that taking up the name was a good decision.
“I am Spike” he continued.
Jessica nodded because she was confused. They had in no way answered her question. All they had done was say their names and she had no idea why they were in the living room having a chatter with Xavier. She glanced back at Xavier hoping to get an answer from him instead.
“They would be your guards, so do not get startled when they follow you around,” he said in an assuring tone.
“Xavier,” she said allowing the name to roll off her tongue slowly. He raised his eyebrow. Her expression was clear and he knew she was not comfortable with the decision.Published by Nôv'elD/rama.Org.
“Do not worry they won’t get in your way, you won’t even know that they are there” he continued trying to explain.
“Can we talk in private?” she asked.
Xavier dismissed both men with a wave of the hand. They were confused about where to go since it was their first day at the house but they left anyway.
“Why do I need guards? I have been fine all this while, I am sure I can take care of myself” Jessica said and Xavier sighed.
He anticipated this conversation with her. He knew that there was no way she would agree right off the bat to accept the guards.
“I know you can and there is no doubt about that,”
“So?”
“Jessica, in the whole six hours when I could not find you, I could swear that I almost lost my sanity and I want you to be safe at all times too”
“Come on, Xavier I am fine, it was a one-time thing with my aunt and I am sure there would be no way she could do something like that again”
“Jessica, can you just do this for me?”
“For you?”
“I was so worried today and I am sure with these men with you we can avoid any incident like this again”
She looked up and tried to think it through. Won’t others think she was stuck up and proud if she went around with a security detail? Chichester was a relatively peaceful place so people rarely had security details follow them around.
“Just so I know you are safe at all times” he added when she was quiet for too long.
“Are you going to have to?” she asked.
Xavier opened his mouth to answer but stopped when he thought about it deeply once again. She was the one who was kidnapped but here she was still worried about his safety.
“Why don’t you worry about yourself first” he asked rubbing her knee with his hand.
“Are you?” she asked tilting her head a little.
“Yes, I will,” he said taking her hands in his and squeezing them a little. “I will also have a security detail with my lot because I need them but because I don’t want you to feel left out” he explained and she nodded.
“So that settles it right?” he asked and she nodded again.
“I am glad you have a guard too,” she said as she felt the warmth of his hand spread through her body.
“I don’t need one, as I said I am only having one so you feel comfortable about having one too”
“Yeah that is correct” she replied sarcastically which made his eyebrow go up quickly.
“What?” he asked and waited for her to respond.
“I mean you barely made an effort to fight those men and left all the work to the other men who came with you,” she said trying to tease him. “I mean when you did not fight for me I thought you did not want me in your life anymore”
She saw his face flush and knew she was doing a good job of teasing him. She has never been able to successfully tease him before without him turning it back on her.
“I mean, in movies, those men usually do extreme stunts and then dramatically save the lady” she ranted when she felt his lips on her hand.
“I hope you do not believe in that notion,” he said quietly and slowly. “I thought my world was going to end today”
She squealed internally when he compared her to his world. Maybe that was the validation she needed.
“I want to wash away all those thoughts from your head,” he said tapping her forehead.
She shook her head and gave him a small glare. He smiled and bent in giving her a kiss on the forehead.
“Those kinds of thoughts be gone”
